PLANTS

The Naze and surrounding area holds many rare and local species having as it does a variety of habitats
everything from Acid grass coastal Heath land through Secondary Woodland and Salt-Marsh and Sand-Dunes.

The rough grassland of the Naze and Seawall holds one species that is extremely rare only known from two sites
Nationally, this is the Sea Hogs-fennel. This species was first recorded at the Naze  by John Gerard in his great Herbal of 1597 where he describes it as 'growing in a medow neere to the seaside'. It is still found in same two
areas now these being Walton Backwaters and Faversham in Kent.  Another rare species found here is the pretty pink annual Sea Clover. Which in the U.K. is only found in the South-East of England.

An early flowering species is the Coltsfoot who's bright yellow Daisy like flowers appear in March - April before its large rhubarb like leaves.

In Summer the Beach at the northern end of the Naze is covered in a tall yellow Pea flower, this is the introduced Common Mellilot, The plant when dried smells of new mown hay, this is because it contains the chemical
Coumarin.

In Spring the whole of the Naze turns bright yellow with the flowers of the Common Gorse or Furze, on warm Summer days the exotic and distinctive smell of Coconut and Pineapple  can be smelt for kilometres on the breeze.

A species found on the drier grassy areas throughout the area with glaucous foliage and pink flowers is the
Common Centaury. It grows to 30 Cm high and flowers from
June - September.

A plant to look for in mid summer is the Common Broomrape, this is a leafless semi parasite and can be found growing on the roots of the Teasel, there is a large colony on the Tamarisk wall.
